Jason Turchin, Esq.

If you or a loved one were burned when a Tristar 6-Quart Power Quick Pot pressure cooker (model Y6D-36) opened while pressurized, you may be able to pursue a Power Quick Pot burn lawsuit seeking compensation for medical bills, lost income, scarring and pain. Call the Law Offices of Jason Turchin for a free consultation at 800-337-7755.

On October 15, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a safety warning telling consumers to immediately stop using the 6-Quart Power Quick Pot electric pressure cookers, model Y6D-36. According to the CPSC warning, the cooker’s lid can open while the unit is still pressurized, causing hot contents to be expelled unexpectedly. The agency reports it has obtained 24 reports of these cookers expelling hot contents, resulting in serious burn injuries.

What makes this warning stand out is what did not happen. The CPSC states that the importer, Tristar Products, Inc., of Altamonte Springs, Florida, has refused to recall these products or offer a remedy to consumers. That means there is no refund, no repair and no replacement program. People who own one of these cookers are being told to stop using it and dispose of it, and people who were already hurt may be left wondering where to turn.

What the CPSC Warning Says About the Power Quick Pot

Here are the key details from the CPSC safety warning (Product Safety Warning Number 27-030):

  • Product: Power Quick Pot 6-Quart electric pressure cookers, model Y6D-36
  • Hazard: The lid can open while pressurized, causing hot contents to be expelled unexpectedly
  • Units: About 393,000
  • Reported incidents: 24 reports of hot contents being expelled, resulting in serious burn injuries
  • Sold at: Walmart.com, Amazon.com, Ebay.com and other retailers nationwide from about July 2018 to November 2023, for between $44 and $160
  • Importer: Tristar Products, Inc., of Altamonte Springs, Florida
  • Manufactured in: China

The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the cookers immediately, dispose of them, and not sell or give them away. The agency also asks people to report any injury or product defect at SaferProducts.gov.

How to Tell If You Own the Affected Cooker

According to the CPSC, the affected cookers are stainless steel with a black pressure lid, button controls and a digital temperature and function display. “Power Quick Pot” is printed on the front, and the model number appears on a label on the back of the unit. If the label reads Y6D-36, your cooker is covered by the warning.

Many of these cookers were bought online years ago, and some were given as gifts. If you are not sure where yours came from, the label on the back is the most reliable way to check.

Why a Pressure Cooker Lid Opening Under Pressure Is So Dangerous

A pressure cooker works by trapping steam so the liquid inside can reach temperatures above normal boiling. That is what makes it fast. It is also why a lid failure can be so harmful. When a lid releases while the pot is still pressurized, the contents may not simply spill. They can be forced out of the pot, spraying boiling liquid, steam and food across the kitchen and onto whoever is standing nearby.

Burns from pressurized contents often affect the face, neck, chest, arms and hands, because people are usually leaning over or standing directly in front of the cooker when they open it. Soups, stews, beans and rice can cling to skin, which may lengthen contact time and deepen the burn. Injuries can range from painful first-degree burns to second- and third-degree burns that may require hospital care, wound treatment, skin grafts and long-term scar management.

Most home cooks assume a pressure cooker’s lid will stay locked while pressure remains inside. When a product is designed and marketed with safety locking features, users reasonably rely on them. If those features fail, the law may hold the companies responsible for the product accountable for the harm.

Who May Be Responsible for Power Quick Pot Burn Injuries

Florida product liability law can allow injured people to seek compensation from companies in the chain of distribution when a defective product causes harm. Depending on the facts, potentially responsible parties may include:

  • The importer and distributor. The CPSC identifies Tristar Products, Inc. as the importer. Because the products were manufactured in China, the company that brought them into the U.S. market may play a central role in a claim.
  • The manufacturer. The overseas company that built the cooker may also share responsibility, though pursuing foreign manufacturers can raise additional legal issues.
  • Retailers and sellers. In some situations, companies that sold the product may be part of a claim, depending on their role and the applicable law.

Product liability claims are commonly built on one or more theories, such as a design defect (the lid or locking system may have been unsafe as designed), a manufacturing defect (a particular unit may have been built incorrectly), or a failure to warn (instructions and warnings may not have adequately described the risks). An experienced attorney can review how your injury happened and which theories may fit.

Compensation You May Be Able to Seek

In a Power Quick Pot burn lawsuit, an injured person may be able to pursue damages for losses such as:

  • Emergency room, hospital and burn unit costs
  • Surgery, skin grafts and wound care
  • Future medical treatment, including scar revision
  • Lost wages and reduced ability to earn income
  • Pain and suffering
  • Disfigurement and scarring
  • Emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life

When a child is injured, parents may also have claims for certain medical expenses they paid. No attorney can promise a specific outcome, but a careful review of your losses can help you understand what may be available.

What to Do If You Were Burned by a Power Quick Pot

  1. Get medical care. Burns can worsen over hours or days. Prompt treatment protects your health and creates a record of your injuries.
  2. Stop using the cooker. Unplug it and do not use it again.
  3. Talk to a lawyer before throwing it away. The CPSC advises disposal, but if you were injured, the cooker itself may be important evidence. Consider storing it safely, unplugged and out of reach, until you have spoken with an attorney.
  4. Take photos. Photograph your injuries over time, the cooker, the label showing model Y6D-36 and the scene where it happened.
  5. Save your records. Keep receipts, order confirmations from Walmart.com, Amazon.com, Ebay.com or other sellers, the manual and the box if you still have them.
  6. Report the incident. You may report your injury to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.
  7. Be careful with statements. Avoid giving recorded statements to the company or its insurers before getting legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Power Quick Pot Burn Claims

Is the Power Quick Pot being recalled?

According to the CPSC, Tristar Products, Inc. has refused to recall the 6-Quart Power Quick Pot model Y6D-36 or offer a remedy. The CPSC issued a safety warning instead, urging consumers to stop using the cookers immediately.

Can I file a claim even though there is no official recall?

Possibly. A recall is not required to bring a product liability claim. If a defect in the cooker caused your injury, you may have legal rights whether or not the product was formally recalled.

What if I used the cooker incorrectly?

Companies sometimes argue that users made a mistake. That does not automatically end a claim. Products are generally expected to be reasonably safe for foreseeable use, and safety locks are designed to prevent a lid from opening under pressure. An attorney can review what happened in your case.

I already threw my cooker away. Do I still have a case?

You may. Having the cooker can help, but photos, purchase records, medical records and witness accounts can also support a claim. Let us know what evidence you still have.

How long do I have to file a Power Quick Pot burn lawsuit in Florida?

Florida law sets deadlines for injury claims, and for some types of claims the deadline can be as short as two years. The time limit that applies may depend on the legal theories involved and when the injury occurred. Contacting a lawyer soon can help protect your rights.

How much does it cost to talk to your firm?

Consultations are free. Our firm handles personal injury cases on a contingency fee basis, which generally means you pay no attorney fees unless there is a recovery.

Do I have to live in Florida to get help?

Our firm focuses on Florida, but the cookers were sold nationwide. If you were hurt outside Florida, call us to discuss your situation and options.
